Pre-treatment assessment

Beyond the physical: Why mindset matters for long-term bariatric outcomes

Choosing bariatric surgery is a profound decision to reclaim your health and vitality. While the procedure alters your anatomy, it doesn't automatically rewrite your relationship with food, stress, or deep-seated habits.

In Australia, a pre-surgery psychological assessment is rarely mandatory. Instead, it is a proactive choice. Because it isn’t compulsory, choosing to undergo an assessment means you are actively prioritising your mental wellbeing and choosing to support your long-term health.

At Bariatric Wellness Psychology, our pre-surgery assessment is designed to give you the psychological framework to support your health and wellbeing transformation for years to come.

Before your appointment

You will be sent a range of questionnaires to complete that will help us identify important things to talk about together.

During your appointment

We will discuss:

  • Your surgical or medical weight loss decision and how you are feeling about it

  • Your expectations of treatment and outcomes

  • The connection between behaviours, emotions, thoughts, and wellbeing

  • Any worries you have about surgery or medication, and ongoing adjustment

After your appointment

We will provide you with a report and a resource pack containing information and strategies to help you get the most from your surgical or medical treatment.
